The United Arab Emirates is rapidly emerging as a global leader in renewable energy, not merely through expanding solar panel installations, but by strategically integrating artificial intelligence and advanced storage solutions. This commitment was powerfully underscored by Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, during her address to the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The conference, hosted in Abu Dhabi from January 10th to 12th, focused on “Powering the Future: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity,” and brought together key players from 171 member states, including energy leaders, policymakers, CEOs, investors, and youth representatives. The UAE’s proactive stance on الطاقة المتجددة (Renewable Energy) is shaping the international conversation towards a more sustainable and secure energy future.
UAE’s Pioneering Role in the Global Energy Transition
Dr. Al Dahak emphasized that despite current geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties, global momentum towards الطاقة المتجددة (Renewable Energy) remains unwavering and is, in fact, accelerating. She highlighted the UAE’s remarkable progress, moving decisively from planning to impactful implementation. “We have doubled our renewable energy capacity from 3.1 gigawatts in 2022 to 6 gigawatts by 2024, and we are steadily progressing towards our national target of 14.2 gigawatts by 2030,” she stated, showcasing the nation’s dedication. This expansion isn’t just about scale, but about innovation and system intelligence.
A Hybrid Power Plant: A Glimpse into the Future
A cornerstone of this progress is a groundbreaking hybrid solar and energy storage plant currently under development in Abu Dhabi by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). This project boasts an impressive 5 gigawatt production capacity coupled with 19 gigawatt-hour storage, representing a pivotal leap forward. Dr. Al Dahak presented it not simply as a power station, but as a model for future global energy systems.
“This project will provide 1 gigawatt of continuous clean energy around the clock, utilizing artificial intelligence for prediction and smart transmission,” she explained. “It effectively addresses the intermittent nature of renewable sources, providing a stable, reliable energy supply.” The integration of الذكاء الاصطناعي (Artificial Intelligence) is a key differentiator in the UAE’s approach, ensuring consistent power delivery regardless of weather conditions.
Supporting Sustainable Development in the Global South
The UAE’s commitment to renewable energy extends beyond its borders, demonstrating a strong dedication to supporting sustainable development in the Global South. Dr. Al Dahak announced the launch of the “AI for Development” initiative, a $1 billion investment aimed at bolstering technology projects in Africa and accelerating the integration of these technologies into vital sectors like infrastructure and agriculture. This initiative signals a broader strategy of leveraging technology transfer and capacity building to fuel sustainable growth globally. The emphasis on التنمية المستدامة (Sustainable Development) is a central tenet of the UAE’s foreign policy.
Commitment to Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Furthermore, the UAE reaffirmed its support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), recognizing their unique vulnerabilities to climate change. Dr. Al Dahak detailed the establishment of the UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund ($50 million) and the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund ($50 million), both of which have significantly contributed to enhancing energy security in 16 Caribbean island nations. She stressed the vital importance of climate justice, stating that empowering women is integral to achieving it, particularly within communities most impacted by climate change.
Empowering Youth and the Role of Women in Energy
On the sidelines of the IRENA Assembly, Dr. Al Dahak participated in a high-level session focused on “Women in Diplomacy and Renewable Energy,” specifically addressing the challenges faced by SIDS. She powerfully argued that climate justice cannot be fully realized without the empowerment of women. “Our collective mission is to align energy, water, and women’s empowerment,” she declared.
Addressing the next generation of leaders at the IRENA Youth Forum 2026, held at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, she directly encouraged young people, calling them “the engineers of new systems.” She underscored that while technology is crucial, it is ultimately their passion, courage, and innovative thinking that will ensure its benefits are directed towards humanity. She also invited the youth to actively engage in the discussions during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Investing in تمكين الشباب (youth empowerment) is a priority for the UAE.
Looking Ahead – Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and Global Collaboration
Dr. Al Dahak concluded her participation by extending an open invitation to all delegates to actively participate in the upcoming Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, beginning immediately after the Assembly and continuing until January 15th, 2026, under the theme “A Holistic Path to the Future.” She reaffirmed the UAE’s readiness to collaborate with all partners, particularly SIDS, IRENA, Italy, and the international community, to expand the reach of renewable energy and fortify water security.
The UAE’s leadership in الطاقة المتجددة (Renewable Energy) is not just a national ambition, but a testament to its commitment to a sustainable and inclusive future for all. By embracing technological innovation, fostering international cooperation, and prioritizing the empowerment of women and youth, the UAE is paving the way for a global energy transition that truly leaves no one behind. The world’s presence in Abu Dhabi serves as a powerful affirmation of the UAE’s role as a global hub for innovation and a trusted partner in shaping a sustainable and equitable planet.
